Toomer said no one will be called on to answer questions. Participants are encouraged to attend even if they have not done the homework. CBS helps them make sense of Scripture through daily readings, homework and group discussions. Toomer said most people don’t get far in the Bible because they don’t understand it.
So she took on the role of young adult director and hopes to begin classes for that segment of the local population in September. Toomer, whose family owns the Bluffton Oyster Company and Toomer’s Family Seafood House, heard about this and felt God was calling her to start a local class for that age group. To Toomer’s delight, CBS started a Bible study for millennials a few years ago and now has classes in Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Charlotte, N.C. People have to choose to spend time with him by reading the Bible.Ī core leader with a local chapter of the international, nondenominational Community Bible Study for the past four years and a participant for the past 12 years, Toomer knows the power of Scripture and wants to make sure young adults don’t miss out on that. She said there’s so much more to having a relationship with Christ than attending church on Sundays. “You’re just kind of left out there, and there’s nothing for you except to go sit in Sunday service,” Toomer said. She said most churches have programs for kids through high school, but when a teenager graduates and goes off to college, there’s not much available as far as Bible study groups. As the mother of three millennials and stepmother of two more, Tina Toomer has seen firsthand the struggle many young adults go through, searching for direction in their lives.
